The NFRC was established in 2002 to promote the construction and operation of nuclear reprocessing facilities. NFRC promotes reprocessing commercial spent nuclear fuel that is generated by commercial nuclear power plants.

Reprocessing dramatically reduces the amount of high-level radioactive waste that would have to be stored in a geologic repository. We also support reprocessing plutonium and highly enriched uranium from nuclear warheads into fuel for use in commercial nuclear power plants.

Waste Confidence Draft EIS

A Message from the Nuclear Regulatory Commisstion's Waste Confidence Directorate

Greetings,

The Waste Confidence Directorate has two items we would like to share with you. The Waste Confidence Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (DGEIS) is publicly available at http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1322/ML13224A106.pdf. The document is also available in ADAMS under ML13224A106.

On Friday, September 13, three Federal Register notices will be published:

The proposed Waste Confidence rule;

The NRC’s Notice of Availability of the DGEIS; and

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Notice of Availability of the DGEIS.

Next Friday you will receive another e-mail to announce the start of the public comment period. This email will also provide direct links to all three of these Federal Register notices, as well as detailed information on how you can submit your comments on the DGEIS and the proposed Waste Confidence rule.

The 75-day public comment period on the DGEIS and proposed rule will begin on Friday, September 13, and end on Wednesday, November 27. Even though the DGEIS is publicly available now, please wait to submit any comments on the document until the comment period starts on September 13.

Today the NRC published a Federal Register notice announcing the details of our upcoming twelve public meetings. Earlier this week you should have received an e-mail from WCOutreach@nrc.gov summarizing the information in this notice, including how to register for the meetings. Meeting details and registration instructions are also available on the Waste Confidence Public Involvement webpage
Additionally, we have finalized the details for our Chicago meeting:

Thursday,
October 24
Oak Brook, Illinois
1401 West 22nd Street
Oak Brook, IL 60523
Open House
6:00-7:00 p.m. CDT
Meeting
7:00-10:00 p.m. CDT

If you are unable to submit comments during a meeting or if you want to supplement or provide additional comments after a meeting, the NRC will accept written comments from any member of the public, including participants at the public meetings. The procedures for submitting comments will be detailed in the upcoming Federal Register notices that announce the availability of the documents and the start of the public comment period. Please note that written comments and comments submitted on the record at the public meetings will be treated equally as the NRC develops the final GEIS and rule.

If you have any questions about the issuance of the DGEIS, the upcoming Federal Register notices, or the public meetings, please call Sarah Lopas at (301) 287-0675 or e-mail her. To register for any of the public meetings, please see the instructions

Thank you,
